Modern pressure vessel code rules such as those contained in Section III of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel code (henceforth called Code) recognize that flaws may be present in pressure vessels and, therefore, design, fabrication, and examination rules are specified to minimize the existence of flaws. Despite these efforts, the operating experience of nuclear pressure vessel components has revealed that complete elimination of flaws in pressure vessels is impractical due primarily to technological limitations in the manufacture of materials, fabrication of components and methods of examination. It is also recognized that cracks (cracks and flaws are used synonymously in this report) appear due to various in-service conditions which are often difficult to identify and correct. Section XI of the Code specifies the rules for evaluation of flaws found during in-service inspection. A complete understanding of the origin, growth and critical sizes of flaws are necessary to assure safe and reliable operation.
