Full Description

The objective of this research project was to clarify the effects of PWHT conditions on the properties of TMCP steel in comparison with conventional heat-treated steel. A study on the possibility of eliminating PWHT with TMCP steels was the main subject of this cooperative research. This report was prepared by the Subcommittee on Pressure Vessel Steels of the Materials Division of the Japan Pressure Vessel Research Council. Publication of this report - WRC Bulletin No. 371 was sponsored by the Pressure Vessel Research Council of the Welding Research Council, Inc.

The use of Thermo-mechanical Control Process (TMCP) results in high tensile strength and good weldability without deterioration of toughness. This process is now widely applied for the manufacture of steel plate. Recently TMCP was introduced into ASTM Standard A841/A841M (Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels, Produced by the Thermo-Mechanical Control Process), and as well as into JIS Standards G 3106 (Rolled Steels for Welded Structure) and G 3115 (Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels for Intermediate Temperature Service). The advantages of TMCP will be utilized increasingly from now on for improvement of the properties of base plate and welded joint.
