Full Description

The design of shipping containers for the domestic transport of radioactive nuclear fuels (new and spent) and radioactive nuclear materials is governed by the regulations from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC). The primary regulations are put forth in 10CFR Part 71, "Packaging and Transportation of Radioactive Material". The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 3 has for a number of years been developing design rules for radioactive nuclear materials shipping confinements. The intent of these rules is to provide codified design and fabrication standards which are consistent and compliant with various regulations and requirements for the design of transportation containments for nuclear materials. In addition the United States Department of Energy (DOE) has funded research for the development of design guides for radioactive materials shipping casks.
