Full Description

This Bulletin is part of a series that describe technology being developed that will be proposed for inclusion in the 2007 Edition of Section VIII, Division 2 (The Div. 2 Rewrite). WRC Bulletin 503 on Physical Properties is the first in the series. The Improved Flange Design Project identifies areas of possible improvement, develops rules for those areas of improvement into the code and verifies newly developed rules for technology. Three goals for new rules are: bolted flanges that are fit for purpose (safe); less prone to leakage; simple and practical methods of design. The project prioritizes the work based on areas of known deficiencies with the present method of flange design in the ASME code and on areas that provide the largest impact in overall reduction of the incidence of flange failure (leakage). The project looks at recent international code developments on improved flange design (EN-1591) and recent testing conducted by PVRC and JPVRC researchers on various aspects of flange design. The project is structured in three phases; the focus of this report is the first phase to summarize the status of flange design on a world-wide basis. In this phase, an industry survey is conducted to establish areas of primary concern with flange design in industry. In addition, a comparison will be made between the principal code rules available today for flange design. This Bulletin reports on the results of this phase.
