Full Description

Welding in the vertical position between retaining shoes is presently being practiced by two related procedures, electroslag welding, and electrogas welding. These procedures are sufficiently similar in many respects to warrant their treatment in a single report, but they are at the same time distinctively different in mode of operation. Official definitions recently formulated for them by the American Welding Society emphasize this difference, categorizing one as a process (a basic manner of welding) and the other a method (a subordinate variation of a different process of welding). They consider electroslag welding a welding process, and as such it appears as a circle on the Master Chart of Welding Processes. Electrogas welding they recognize as merely a method of performing either gas metal-arc welding or flux-cored arc welding, and so it does not appear as a separate circle on the Master Chart. Nevertheless, the two are discussed together in this report because they have great similarity in their equipment, in their manner of preparing the work for welding, and in their welding sequence.
