Description / Abstract:
This document serves as the interoperability specification for
the Dual-Rate Vocoder employed within the TIA-102 series of
documents. This document merges two previous vocoder standard
documents, one published as TIA-102.BABA to describe a Full-Rate
Vocoder at a gross bit rate of 7200 bps, and one published as
TIA-102.BABA-1 to describe a Half-Rate Vocoder at a gross bit rate
of 3600 bps. This document now describes the functional
requirements for the transmission and reception of voice
information using digital communication media described in the
TIA-102 series of documents at either bit rate. This document is
specifically intended to define the conversion of voice from an
analog representation to a Full-Rate or a Half-Rate digital
representation. The Full- Rate digital representation consists of a
net bit rate of 4400 bps for voice information, and a gross bit
rate of 7200 bps after error control coding. The Half-Rate digital
representation consists of a net bit rate of 2450 bps for voice
information, and a gross bit rate of 3600 bps after error control
coding.
The voice coder (or vocoder) presented in this document is
intended to be used in any equipment that requires an
analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog voice interface.
Specifically, mobile and portable radios as well as console
equipment and gateways to voice networks may contain the vocoder
described in this document. The reader is referred to the TIA-102
series of documents for additional information on the integration
of the vocoder into the overall communication system.
The Full-Rate Vocoder is intended for use over a radio air
interface providing 7200 bps for voice data plus forward error
correction (FEC). The reader is referred to the FDMA Common Air
Interface standard, TIA-102.BAAA, and other related standards for
more information pertaining to the radio FDMA air interface.
The Half-Rate Vocoder is intended for use over a radio air
interface providing 3600 bps for voice data plus FEC. The reader is
referred to the Phase 2 Two-Slot TDMA Media Access Control
standard, TIA-102.BBAC, and other related standards for more
information pertaining to the radio TDMA air interface.
