Scope and Applicability Because of the wide range of user bodies, the EDI standards were created to be as broad as possible and to accommodate all business needs. The generic result, although usable, has much more information than is of interest to any particular group. In a practical sense, in order for-the standards to be used in an efficient and effective manner, the scope needs to be defined in more selective terms. The international scope of the AVNET participants dictated the use of both the North American and International EDI standards. The united and coordinated AVNET effort has worked to maintain comparability of information contained in the two standard formats; the aim has been to make implementation of EDI in either or both standards straightforward and nearly transparent to the user. It is anticipated that companies involved in implementing EDI will utilize this guideline in developing their own specific implementations of the standards. Purpose of Guidelines This Implementation Guide was developed by the International AVNET EDI project participants through joint participation of the Air Transport Association of America, American Petroleum Institute and International Air Transport Association. It is intended to assist airlines, petroleum companies and other entities, such as FBOs (fixed-base operators) and servicing companies, concerned with the sale and delivery of aviation fuel and related products and services, in the implementation of relevant electronic data interchange standards.
