Titanium and Titanium Alloys
Scope : Three outstanding properties of titaniumâ??light weight, excellent corrosion resistance, and high strength-to-weight ratioâ??make this metal valuable for applications in the chemical, aerospace, marine, and petrochemical industries. Titanium alloys are also used in the medical field and in the manufacture of sports equipment. Titanium and its alloys are readily weldable by many processes, but certain precautions are recommended. Pure titanium is a silver-colored metal that melts at approximately 1670°C (3035°F) and boils at 3260°C (5900°F). The average coefficient of thermal expansion is 8.41 ?m/m/°C (4.67 ?-in./in./°F) at 20°C (68°F). Titanium has a density of 4.51 g/cm3 (0.163 lb/in.3). Figure 6.1 shows the microstructure of ASTM Grade 2, commercially pure titanium plate.
