A water distribution system consists of numerousappurtenances that are interconnected, creating anetwork comprising nodes and branches. Basicprocess variables are used to describe the behavior ofthese elements and nodes, and control of theseprocess variables is important for proper operation ofa distribution system. The authors describe an alternativecontroller that combines the nonlinear controltechnique known as dynamic inversion (DI) withproportional integral derivative (PID) features tocope with existing control problems. Proportionalderivative (PD) and PID controllers are presented andcompared with DI-based robust nonlinearcontrollers. In this study, emphasis is given to determininghow quickly a water distribution system canbe controlled in order to reach different targetswithin a short time and without creating undue transients.In this regard, control algorithms play animportant role in real-time control of a water distributionsystem. Thus, development of controllers forpumping and valve operations can significantlyimprove any water distribution system with respectto reducing leakage, maintaining pressure, and controllingflow in the entire network.
