Full Description

Better operational control of water networkscan help reduce leakage, maintain pressure, andcontrol flow. Proportional integral derivative(PID) controllers, with proper fine-tuning, canhelp water utility operators achieve targets fasterwithout creating undue transients. The authorscompared three tuning methods, in different testsituations, involving flow and level control todifferent reservoirs. Although target values werereached with all three tuning methods, the methods'performances varied significantly. The lowestperformer among the three was the methodmost widely used in the industry, standardtuning by the Ziegler-Nichols method. Achievingbetter results was offline tuning by genetic algorithms.Achieving the best control, though, wasa fuzzy logic-based online tuning approach, theFZPID controller. The FZPID controller hadfewer overshoots and took significantly less timeto tune the gains for each problem. This newtuning approach for PID controllers can beapplied to a variety of problems and canincrease the performance of water networks ofany size and structure. Includes 12 references, tables, figures.
