Full Description

Slow sand filtration, a single-step complete waterpurification system for low-turbidity waters, is easy tooperate and maintain, and therefore suitable in ruralareas that lack skilled personnel. One question thathas persisted in slow sand filtration design, particularlyfor tropical countries, is whether filters needto be covered.Studies were conducted to assess slow sand filtrationperformance under sun, shaded, and coveredconditions. The presence of algae in the raw waterfilters marginally affected the length of filter run anddid not affect the filtrate quality in turbidity under allmodes of operation. No significant differences wereobserved in functioning of slow sand filters in termsof organic matter removal in the sun, shaded, orcovered filters, and the total throughput of all thefilters was comparable. These results suggest thatslow sand filtration systems can be designed withouta roof in tropical countries, thus reducing constructioncosts. Includes 14 references, tables, figures.
