It has become generally accepted thatwater quality can deteriorate in a distributionsystem through microbiological and chemicalreactions in the bulk phase and/or at the pipewall. A serious aspect of water quality deteriorationin a network is the loss of the disinfectantresidual that can weaken the barrieragainst microbial contamination. The purposeof this study was to address the loss of freechlorine in corroded metal and polyvinylchloride (PVC) pipes subject to changes invelocity. The study demonstrated that in olderunlined metal pipes, chlorine residuals disappearrapidly with increased velocity butremain stable in PVC pipe.It is clear from the experiments reportedin this article that there are differencesbetween the wall demand characteristics ofunlined metallic and PVC pipe and that thesedifferences have regulatory implications. Theauthors also found that although distributionsystem modeling is an important activity thatshould be maintained and even expanded, nomodel is perfect and utilities must maintain acarefully constructed calibration programwhen models are used.
