The purpose of this standard is to establish anationally recognized basis for checking thesize of abrasive grain for use in the manufactureof grinding wheels, general polishing andother general industrial uses such as pressureblasting, lithoplate graining, etc.) It is intendedto serve as a common basis of understandingfor abrasive grain producers, and for themanufacturers, distributors, and users of theseabrasive products. This standard sets forth thegrit size designations, the size limits and thesieves used in determining them, as well as thetest procedure which is used by the industry forchecking the size of abrasive grain. Abrasivegrain is a natural or manufactured substancethat is reduced by crushing to specific grit sizes,and is then made into products which are usedfor removing extraneous material by grinding,polishing, lapping, etc. Examples of some ofthe natural materials are corundum, emery,and garnet; manufactured materials are fusedaluminum oxide and silicon carbide.
